The rule in detail

Most airlines check a stroller and a car seat free of charge, on top of your normal baggage allowance. A folding stroller does not have to go in at the check-in desk: you can push it all the way to the gate, hand it over there, and collect it at the gate or on the belt at arrival. If you bought a seat for the child, an airline-approved car seat may be fitted to it in the cabin. Wheels and frames get scuffed on the belt, so a travel cover is worth having.

Why the rule is written this way

It is classified as Checked baggage only because in a sealed cabin full of passengers, pressure changes make this item more dangerous than it is in the hold.

Check it in, and wrap it in a zip-lock bag as well so nothing else in the suitcase is ruined if it leaks or breaks.

What actually happens at the airport

  1. Check-in desk — this is the point of no return for your suitcase. Anything that may only travel in the cabin cannot be retrieved after this step.
  2. Security screening — if the X-ray flags a shape, the bag is opened. Most problem items are caught here.
  3. Extra check at the gate — on some routes there is one more inspection.

Confiscated items are rarely returned. If you are unsure, confirm the specification before you leave home.

💡 Worth knowing

Whether gate check is offered, and where the stroller comes back, differs by airline and airport — confirm it when you book
